Invest in your business

In a former life, I was enamored by legendary investors like Michael Price, John Bogle, and the King of all Investors, Warren Buffett. I liked how they picked companies (not necessarily stocks) based on performance and value.

And often, that value was hidden by terrible stock performance. But they dove in, invested a bit, and then when it looked like they had entered at a good time, they doubled down (or more). Most of the time, they “buy and hold” as the intrinsic value of their stocks steadily climbs toward the sky.

Now, you may be wondering, What does this have to do with anything? We're not investors. We're internet marketers! We need a bright shiny object to buy or sell…

Stop doing that 🙂

Provide people with value. Buy things of value. If you can't put something to work right away, you probably shouldn't buy it. Not because it's bad but because you won't ever get to it. And maybe, by the time you do, it won't be useful any longer. Who knows.

Don't get me wrong. There is a ton of good stuff out there that can help you build your business. Most sellers aren't really keen on selling crap, either. But be selective – you can spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on new stuff that you'll never put to use.

Give yourself a chance to succeed. Put together a plan, buy only what will help you make that plan come to fruition, and set aside all the other stuff as simply “noise”.

Because it is.
