I bet you've heard the line, “If you build it, they will come.”

That was great in that outstanding movie with Kevin Costner, Field of Dreams.

But this ain't Hollywood, and your bills won't get paid by unicorns.

This is the real world. Your fledgling business depends on you getting quality leads that you can sell to, or sign up, or get on a list so you can continue building relationships until they do buy.

Right?

So, first things first. You need a website. Build it. But people won't just show up. They won't even know your website exists.

Sure, your site may wind up in a Google search. But it probably won't in the very beginning. You'll have to coax the “Big G” to begin ranking your pages in their search results.

That can be a long and slow process. It definitely works, though.

Consider other means though, in the meantime.

I know that Google ranks sites with really great traffic higher than low-traffic sites.

The surest route to higher rankings is getting more traffic.

But is this about rankings at all?

The title implies “No.”

This is about growth hacking. What does that even mean?

Wikipedia defines growth hacking thusly:

Growth hacking is a process of rapid experimentation across marketing channels and product development to identify the most effective, efficient ways to grow a business. Growth hacking[1] refers to a set of both conventional and unconventional marketing experiments that lead to growth of a business. Growth hackers are marketers, engineers and product managers that specifically focus on building and engaging the user base of a business.[2] Growth hackers often focus on low-cost alternatives to traditional marketing, e.g. using social media, viral marketing or targeted advertising[3] instead of buying advertising through more traditional media such as radio, newspaper, and television.[4]

Note that growth hacking is as much about what it isn't as what it is!

It's not about broadcast advertising. It's not about spending money or loads of time on trying things out.

Rather, it's about utilizing methods that grow a business quickly.

Our first order of business is growing your traffic. Tip #1 will follow tomorrow. I hope you continue to read these all the way through.

I'm confident that–if you do–you will be able to grow from 0 to 1,000 website viewers in no time at all (we're talking less than 30 days).

So, stay tuned. Tip #1 will be published tomorrow.
