Conneely at the Zoo
My youngest. She and I drink a yogurt smoothie together every morning.

When you do what we do (create, curate, contemplate, and SIT all day), you have to balance that yin with the yang of moving and taking care of your mind, body, and spirit. In the past, I've neglected that. And it's caused me some serious health issues (a-fib, for one) that I've actually had to correct with medical procedures and prescription medicines.

I hate that.

So my game has changed. My goal is to get off the meds, get back in the shape I was 10 years ago, and be a better person, personally and professionally.

Here's what I'm doing, in case you want to know.

Bill's Daily Routine

  • I eat breakfast now. Actually, I kind of eat 2. I start the day off drinking a “smoothie” with my little one, Conneely. I take my meds with that.
  • About an hour later, I eat a real meal. It usually consists of eggs and toast with butter. I know–“You have a bad heart, you should not be eating that stuff.” I call bullshit. Back when I was at my peak fitness level, I ate similarly to how I eat now, including 2-3 whole eggs a day. And today, I read an article that says whole eggs can actually clean your arteries – here it is: The Food That Sweeps Your Arteries Clean? So there! I'm waiting for a similar feel-good story about bacon.
  • With breakfast, I take a bunch of supplements. You can see the list at the bottom.
  • Then I work.
  • I have a mid-morning snack, usually nuts, fruit, and water. I work through the snack.
  • I take many small breaks throughout the day. I play with my kids for brief periods of time. I talk to my wife (something I didn't do while “working” for a long time).
  • At 11:30, I eat a smallish lunch. High in protein, low in carbs. More supplements.
  • At about 12, I mix up a protein shake with creatine.
  • More work.
  • At 12:30, I go to the gym. I do 20-25 minutes on the treadmill, 20-25 minutes on the bike. Sometimes, it's HIIT, sometimes it's not. I listen to podcasts while doing this.
  • I drink a lotta lotta water all day long.
  • Work some more.
  • At about 3:30, I stop and play with the kids.
  • At 4:30, I help my wife with dinner. Sometimes, I even make it myself. I'm such a big boy!
  • Between 6 and 8 – get the kids ready for bed and chill, either reading or watching light TV (Daily Show).
  • At 8, I write. I write as much as I can in an hour, uninterrupted. I can usually easily bang out 1000 words, but if I'm having an especially good day, I can crank out 2000 words. Did you know I'm writing a series of Kindles? Yep.
  • At 9, I do some bodyweight exercises like dips, pushups, pullups, squats, presses, curls. Simple stuff that kids do and adults forget. To me, if you want to remain young, you gotta do what young people do. I rarely lift weights any more. This is a departure for me. I may step back into that in a few months.
  • At 10, I go to bed. But my day doesn't stop there. It's not what you think! My wife is pregnant and tired. Okay?
  • I visualize what I want to accomplish tomorrow and set the path forward. My subconscious goes to work and work really isn't work the next day, you know?

Supplements

I am a big believer in food supplements. I think our nutrition isn't what it used to be. Much of the nutritional value that we think is in our food really isn't there. But food supplements aren't just insurance; they are more than that. I believe supplements can effect specific outcomes. I'm not a doctor, nor am I a nutritionist. I have read a lot and have experimented a lot over the past 30 years to know what works for me.

This is my regimen:
