Backlink Building Wheels

I'm convinced that for "small sites" like what most of us have (we're not google or wikipedia), backlinks are the key to getting high search engine rankings. Of course, relevant backlinks matter, too, but the single most important thing is quantity of backlinks.

Here's a strategy I use to get TONS of backlinks to my sites. I call it Backlink Building Wheels.

Step by step:

  1. Write an article for an article directory like ezinearticles.com or GoArticles.com (here's a good starter list of article directories). I like goarticles.com because it's quick, easy, and the search engines love it. Place one link in the body that points to a page or post on your site. At the end of this, you'll edit this article to complete the wheel. But for now, just place one.
  2. Write another article that is similar to the first one and publish it in a blogger.com blog (free easy setup). In it, place two links – one to the page you want to promote (the SAME page as in #1) and one to the actual article that gets published in #1.
  3. Write another article, this time on Live Journal. Two links – one to the same page on your site, the other to the article in #2.
  4. Repeat 5-8 times. I use GoArticles.com, blogger, Live Journal, Squidoo, hubpages, and wordpress.com.
  5. Go back to #1 and put in another link – this time to the LAST article you posted, thus completing the "Backlink Building Wheel."
  6. Using social bookmarking services like ping.fm, promote all of the articles above.

This is a very productive strategy for getting relevant backlinks to your site. It may sound cumbersome, but once you get the hang of it, you can create one of these wheels in less than 15 minutes. Time well-spent for getting quality backlinks, if you ask me.

This strategy works well with other backlink building services such as Angela's Backlinks. Simply use #6 to promote the relevancy of each backlink you get.

Tools: My Blog Log

In an online business, more information is usually better than not enough. Unless, that is, you get all tangled up in the details. Which is easy, because with tools like Google Analytics, there is SO MUCH information and there seems not to be much in the way of easy-to-follow documentation on how to use the tool.

MyBlogLog (an unusual name, for sure) is different. Essentially, you can see 3 things that are very important. It's a tool I use every day.

The 3 things are:

  1. How visitors got to your site
  2. What they looked at when they got to your site
  3. Whether or not they clicked something on your site

To me, it's critically important to find out where a user came from. Most of my traffic comes from search engines, most specifically Google. The cool thing about MBL is that it shows you the exact URL a visitor came from, which means you get to see the search term(s) that a visitor used to get to your site.

This is extremely valuable information.

You can do a lot with just this simple information. For example, you can build a page incorporating that exact search phrase. Then, you can link that new page to the page the viewer visited (link both ways). You can also tweak the original page to target that key phrase. Now, you have 2 potential pages that are reachable by that search phrase.

You now also know what potential customers are looking for. Why not write a short report (that's an affiliate link to an awesome report on how to write short reports that sell) that addresses this most obvious need?

MBL also has a neat social networking aspect to it. Your visitors can join your "community" and you can send public and private messages. You can use this small subset of your readers (face it, not everyone will sign up to join your community) as a test bed for offers, as a way to find out what your readers really want, or a host of other things. The potential is limitless.

You can also connect with your readers by adding them to your contacts. You can quickly amass hundreds of contacts, and you know what? Because all of your sites are posted on your profile page, your contacts see them all and — more importantly — they visit!

MyBlogLog is a fantastic way to accomplish multiple things with one tool: It's a social networking tool, it's a stats package (albeit not fully-fleshed out in the free version, which is the version I use because a) I'm cheap and b) it's all I need for now), and it's a great way to find like-minded individuals who write some incredible blogs.

I encourage you to check it out.

By the way, I get nothing out of recommending MyBlogLog, other than you might happen across my profile and connect with me. There is no financial incentive.

One Way to Build Traffic: Entrecard

As you no doubt know, generating traffic to your website is the most important thing you can do. This is NOT Field of Dreams, where, “If you build it, they will come.” No, if you build it, they may never know about it. So you have several objectives when it comes to getting visitors to your site:

  1. Drive traffic
  2. Get visitors to return to your site
  3. Get them to buy what you’re selling

There is one way to drive traffic that I want to share with you today and that is using an advertising network to get the word out about your site. More specifically, I want to talk about a free network called Entrecard.

The idea behind Entrecard is really very simple. It’s an ad exchange of sorts that uses credits rather than currency for its transactions (you can buy and sell credits for money, though, but that’s not the main way to conduct the exchange). Sign up for your free account, customize your ad widget, and start “dropping” your Entrecards.

Here’s how it works in a nutshell. Once signed in, go to Entrecard’s site and click on the “Campaign” button at the top of the page. Then, click on a category and you’ll see a list of sites. Hover your cursor over each of the icons and select “site.” This will take you to the site. Find the site’s Entrecard widget and click on the “Drop” link. You’ve just dropped your Entrecard on that site and have earned one credit. You can drop up to 300 cards each day.

Now, this is where it gets interesting. There is a whole cult following of “reciprocal droppers.” That is, if you drop your card on a site, that site’s owner will drop his card back on your site. This amounts to an instant visitor.

Admittedly, these visitors may not be highly targeted, nor may they stay on your site any length of time, other than to find your widget and drop their card on it.

However, if your site is getting very little traffic, you can give yourself a boost by using Entrecard.

Plus, if you ever want to sell ad spots for your site, you can legitimately claim these as viable visitors.

Now, you can advertise on other sites within the network. There are two ways to do this. You can use your credits that you earned by dropping and getting dropped on, or you can buy credits. I have never bought credits, but it is another option for getting the word out on member sites.

Watch your Stats! You want to continue using those sites where you’re getting results, and drop those ads that don’t work. Try a variety of niches, too. Since the credits are free (if you drop and get drops), it’s easy and cheap to experiment.

Entrecard is a super-simple way of generating traffic to your blog. It may not be the most targeted traffic, but it is traffic. And when you’re just starting out, any traffic is better than none at all. By the way, there are some pretty substantial websites on the network.

I highly recommend Entrecard. It is one of the first things I install and put to work when I start a new blog.

Backlink Building Tool

If you want to rank highly for a given keyword (and who doesn’t?), then you will want to check this out:

http://backlinkwatch.com/

It’s a 4-step process:

  1. Go to google and type in the keyword you want to check
  2. Open the link above, type in the URL of the top sites from Step #1 that you want to check backlinks for
  3. Study the list
  4. Go get some backlinks!

I suggest you go to the links found in the results from #2 and use only the “do follow” links (“do follow” is a misnomer — choose any of the links that don’t say “do not follow”).

If you get some of the backlinks that your competition already has, in addition to using the strategies found at Traffic-Building 101: Backlinks, you will build up some quality backlinks in no time.
