I'm about to put my neck on the line here. I hope you appreciate this.

I just found a way to shortcut the often tedious and LONG drawn-out process of getting local websites ranked on the first page of Google.

Normally, it takes days–if not weeks or months–to get all the "ducks in a row" in order to get a local-based business to the front of Google, but I have found a way that seems to work…

…but I want to try it on some sites I don't own.

So here's what I want to do.

For three lucky businesses, I will set you up for free. No charge. No strings–once I do the work, I won't ask for payment–it's free. As in, it's on the house.

You will have to do a few things though, as follows:

Your site has to be a WordPress site.

You have to give me admin rights to the site.

You have to give me the city and keywords you want to be ranked for.

You must be a "brick and mortar" type of business or one that is concentrating specifically on a service area (like the Bay Area or a specific city or cities).

That's it. It's that simple. If you're interested, please sign up using the form below. It will take me a few days to get enough submissions to make a decision on which 3 sites I pick. This is not a "first come, first serve" offer — I will be picking the 3 sites I want to test this on.

I will not be "stacking the deck," though. I'll be verifying that these really are WordPress sites and that they're a suitable fit for the method I'm employing here.

Wikipedia defines Social Media Optimization (or SMO or Social SEO) as the "methodization of social media activity with the intent of attracting unique visitors to website content. SMO is one of two online methods of website optimization; the other method is search engine optimization or SEO."

Furthermore,

There are two categories of SMO/Social SEO methods:

(a) Social media features added to the content itself, including: RSS feeds, social news and sharing buttons, user rating and polling tools, and incorporating third-party community functionalities like images and videos

(b) Promotional activities in social media aside from the content being promoted, including: blogging, commenting on other blogs, participating in discussion groups, and posting status updates on social networking profiles

What does all this mean?

Social Media Optimization (SMO) matters!

In the "old days," we "SEO experts" could optimize a website–both "onpage" and "offpage"–to attract as much free, organic traffic as possible from the search engines.

Today, another way to bring website visitors (think "prospects") to your website is through social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

As you may know, social media posts have a tendency to go viral–it is not uncommon for a funny YouTube video to reach a few hundred thousand visitors in just a few days.

That sort of popularity will drive a TON of traffic to your website (if you do it right).

Just like there is onpage and offpage components in search engine optimization, so, too, is there on- and offpage social media optimization. Refer again to a) and b) above–a) can be thought of as "onpage SMO" whereas b) can be considered "offpage SMO."

In essence, there are things you can do on your website that can serve to leverage social media: Things like placing social media buttons on your site that allows visitors to share your information easily, encourages interaction, and gives users incentives to participate in the discussion going on at your blog (there are actual plugins that reward frequent commenters on your blog, for example).

Offpage SMO can be publishing your own content on Facebook that links back to your site, tweeting about topical interests, and placing videos on YouTube and other video-centric social media sites that leads back to your website.

An extremely important development in the world of SMO is the tight integration between Facebook and the Bing search engine. Microsoft and Facebook have partnered to deliver a potentially better user experience than Googel will ever be able to deliver (time will tell, of course).

Sidenote: It's astonishing that Google has been dominant for so long in the search engine space. It's equally astonishing to me how they let Facebook move in so easily on social media search. But that's another story…

Social media "buzz" is now appearing in search engine results on both Bing and Facebook. Google has announced its readiness to build social media into its search results; however, it is at least a year behind Facebook and may not be able to catch the leader.

So, pay attention to your SEO and SMO with respect to Bing and Facebook. They may dominate these two converging spaces for the next several years, especially if Google finds that it cannot compete.

In summary, keep a sharp eye towards social media optimization. Good onpage and offpage SMO, as well as SEO, will set you ahead of your competition, perhaps for years to come (early adopters). Don't neglect Bing or Facebook any longer; additionally, keep up to date on SEO, especially with respect to Bing.

Their partnership with Facebook is H-U-G-E! Do not underestimate this synergy.

Of course, adding SMO to an already confusing and hard-to-decipher SEO landscape makes things much more challenging, but to those of us who follow this stuff and figure it out, the fruits of our labor will be well worth the inconvenience we're experiencing right now.

I have written a lot about using blogs to comment on to get relevant backlinks as well as direct traffic to your site. There is another way to use blog commenting to get those benefits as well as to get your site crawled and indexed quickly by the search engines, especially Google.

Here's how.

Find a blog post at a relevant site and comment on it.

In the URL field on the comment form, enter the post or site you want indexed.

Stand back and wait for your post or site to get spidered.

If the blog you commented on gets spidered frequently, you will find that your site or post will get crawled quickly, too, as the search engine "bots" simply follow links on a page and will soon follow yours.

Here are some ways to get valuable backlinks and quick indexing all at once.

Interestingly, both groups often get it all wrong.

Internet marketers often think there's some "gray hat" method that tricks search engines into ranking them higher for a given search term or phrase.

"Joe Business Owner" gets it wrong because he simply thinks you build a website, insert your "keywords" in your website's meta tags, and you're done.

Nothing could be further from the truth, on either side.

SEO can be broken into 2 different parts:

"On page"

"Off page"

On Page SEO

This is the "simple" part of SEO, if anything regarding SEO can be thought of as simple! Since nobody knows what the search engines' algorithms are (I'm convinced the folks employed by the search engines don't even fully know), everything is a guess and–worse–what works for one SE may fail completely for another SE.

How frustrating is that?

Your best bet, really, is to just concentrate on getting a few things right. And if by so doing you don't get ranked at one of the "Big 3" (Google, Yahoo, and Bing), so what?

Yeah, I know. You all think that getting Google to notice your "one in a quadrillion" website is important. It is. But you can do well even if Google doesn't know you exist. Like that girl back in high school you had the hots for. Brings to mind the Toby Keith song, "How Do You Like Me Now?"

But I digress.

Seriously, here's your number one on-page SEO tip: Do these things right and you will be 80 percent there. Then, optimize for one search engine.

Here's the backstory. Once you get to #1 on Google and stay there for a few weeks, it's hard to get toppled from there to #27. It just doesn't happen. In fact, once you're at #1 for a time, you probably won't fall a single spot.

Then, optimize for Yahoo or Bing.

Critical on-page SEO factors

Content. Good content trumps everything else. Make sure that the key phrase you are optimizing for is in the body of your content and isn't overused. 2-3 times is probably the ideal number for an average-length post. The longer the post, the more times you can use the key phrase.

Title tag. Include your keywords but make it readable.

Description. For most blogs, the first few sentences of your post make up your description. If you want to make your description more descriptive of your content, get the All in One SEO plugin (if you use WordPress); otherwise, craft your description to describe exactly what your post, page, or article is about.

Tags and Categories. If your site uses a CMS like WordPress, optimize for one key phrase per post. Same if you have a static website. Make sure you tag your post with one specific tag (I often use the title or a variation of it) and/or variations on the same tag, and only categorize your post within one category.

With the above factors in mind, always ask yourself, "What might possible visitors type into a search engine to find this content?"

Optional: Use header tags, bold, italics, etc. to show off your content and cue your reader about what's important. Seriously, think of your reader when you're creating your content. It works!

Off Page SEO

This is where the "hard work" comes in. I firmly believe that with a little bit of practice, anybody can write SEO posts. However, there are many ways to "skin the cat," so to speak, in off-page SEO tactics.

There are a few key considerations when it comes to off-page SEO.

What off-page SEO factors matter?

There are just a few. Here they are. How to tackle them might take a book. But we'll try. Off-page SEO has a lot to do with trust.

Domain age. The SEs seem to "think" that the longer a domain has been around, the more "authoritative" or trustworthy it is. After all, if you've had Ford.com for 15 years, you probably are a major player in your industry.
But you cannot control this. Use it to your advantage if you can, but if your domain name is 3 months old, there ain't a whole lot you can do about that (well, you could buy an "aged domain" but that is another story).

Traffic. Traffic begets traffic. The more traffic you get, the more the search engines take notice. As they notice you, you rise up the ranks. As you rise up the ranks, your traffic grows. As your traffic grows, your rise higher. Get it? Go get some traffic. But how? Again, another story. in the near-term, there's probably not a lot you can do to get a big enough bump in traffic to make a difference.

"Authority." If CNN publishes a story about "homemade widgets," it will almost always beat you in the SERPs (search engine results page). Why is CNN and authority? First, it's trustworthy. Second, it gets a lot of traffic. Third, it's an old domain. Fourth…let's continue.

Backlinks. All other things equal, a site with thousands of backlinks will rank higher in the SEs than a site with 12. Now, in the real world (which is where you're reading this, right?), nothing is ever "all other things equal." So if you want to beat your competition, just go get more backlinks. There's a ton of ways to do this.
None of them are perfect. Or "right." Or "the best way." You have to try this, evaluate results, tweak a bit, look at the results again; keep looping through the Plan-Do-Check-Act routine until you hit #1 for your key phrase.

As you may have guessed, you cannot really affect #1-3.

# 4, building backlinks, is where it's at. That's where you will get your biggest SEO bang for the buck. It is–by far–the best off-page SEO factor to concentrate on.

Here's a little secret though: Use #1-3 to your advantage.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process of choosing the most appropriate targeted keyword phrases related to your site and ensuring that this ranks your site highly in search engines so that when someone searches for specific phrases it returns your site on top.

SEO basically involves fine tuning the content of your site along with the HTML and Meta tags and also involves appropriate link building processes.

The most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms secret, to get credit for finding the most valuable search-results and to deter spam pages from clogging those results. A search engine may use hundreds of factors while ranking the listings where the factors themselves and the weight each carries may change continually.

Algorithms can differ so widely that a webpage that ranks #1 in a particular search engine could rank #200 in another search engine. New sites need not be "submitted" to search engines to be listed (but it can help get you ranked faster). A simple link from a well established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to spider its contents. It can take a few days to even weeks from the referring of a link from such an established site for all the main search engine spiders to commence visiting and indexing the new site.

(HINT: Try "pinging" your site at Pingoat.com.)

If you are unable to research and choose keywords and work on your own search engine ranking, you may want to hire someone to work with you on these issues.

Search engine marketing and promotion companies will look at the plan for your site and make recommendations to increase your search engine ranking and website traffic. If you wish, they will also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website and make recommendations for editing and improvements to keep your site traffic flow and your search engine ranking high. Normally your search engine optimization experts work with your web designer to build an integrated plan right away so that all aspects of design are considered at the same time.

Internet Marketing Muscle can certainly do this for you.

Heck, they add to anything, really. "A picture is worth a thousand words" has never been truer. In fact, sometimes a picture conveys more than words.

In the past, I've always gone to the old search standby, google, when looking for images. It's always worked sufficiently.

{{{premium|5}}}

However, I recently started using bing. It's the revamped search engine from Microsoft and it's wonderful for finding suitable pictures and other images for your blog, sales pages, etc. (always make sure you follow the copyright rules). The cool thing about a bing image search is that seemingly endless relevant search results appear. There is no endless paging through 10 results at a time. You just scroll down the page until you find what you're looking for.

The results are far more relevant and it's so much easier and quicker to find exactly what you're looking for.

I love bing image search!

Your articles serve many purposes, such as establishing you as an expert, pre-selling products and even helping to build relationships with your prospects. But you can also use them to drive traffic to your site when you take the time to optimize them for the search engines.

Here’s the 3S Strategy for creating and distributing optimized articles:

Search

Sprinkle

Share

Read on for the details…

Step #1: Search

Your first step is to search for the keywords your market is already using to find information in your niche. You do this by using a keyword tool (such as Google’s free keyword tool, WordTracker.com or even Market Samurai).

All you have to do is enter in a broad niche-relevant search term like "homeschooling," "organic gardening" or "golf." The tool will then offer you suggestions for related search terms which you can use to expand your list of keywords. In most cases, you’ll generate a list of hundreds if not thousands of possible keywords.

What you’re searching for are longtail keywords – these are phrases that are typically four or more words long. The key is that they have very little competition in the search engines, which means you can rank well for them.

Tip: Many keyword tools check the competition for you. For example, WordTracker offers a KEI (keyword effectiveness index) value, which looks at the number of searches against how many other websites are indexed for that keyword. The higher the KEI value, the better chance you have of ranking well. Look for words that have a KEI value of at least 100 – but the higher the better.

Step #2: Sprinkle

Once you’ve compiled a list of longtail keywords, your next step is to create content around these keywords. You can optimize each article for two keyword phrases if you like, but generally it’s easier to optimize for just one.

The key is to not stuff your article with your keywords, otherwise the search engines may rank it lower (rather than higher). As such, include your keyword in the title of your article as well as about two to three times for every 100 words of content.

Example: Let’s say your keyword is "hydroponic vegetable gardening indoors." Your article might look like this:

Title: "Tips and Tricks for Hydroponic Vegetable Gardening Indoors"
Intro: include keyword at least once.
Hydroponic Vegetable Gardening Indoors Tip #1: explain tip and include keyword once more.
Hydroponic Vegetable Gardening Indoors Tip #2: explain tip and include keyword once more.
Hydroponic Vegetable Gardening Indoors Tip #3: explain tip and include keyword once more.
Closing: Summarize the article and include keyword once more.

Step #3: Share

Once your article is complete, it’s time to share it by distributing it as widely as possible. Don’t worry about so-called "duplicate content." The search engines won’t punish you if they find your articles in more than one place. They only knock you down a bit if they find your content in more than one place within your own domain (i.e., not on other sites).

You do this by:

Posting the article on your blog

Offering it as a guest post on your JV partner’s blog (or newsletter)

Create a Squidoo.com or HubPages.com page around it

Post it on social networking sites like your MySpace.com blog or Facebook.com page

Submit it to article directories such as EzineArticles.com, IdeaMarketers.com, ArticleValley.com, GoArticles.com and Buzzle.com

That’s it. You too can get your articles to pull in search engine traffic for you when you use the Search, Sprinkle and Share system.

Your next step is easy — take action by searching for your keywords to find joint venture partners.
