I answered a question today on Yahoo! Answers about ways to get backlinks to your website. Here are 24!
- Comments on blogs. Many allow you to input your website URL.
- Articles
- Directories
- Niche directories
- Profile links
- RSS
- Web 2.0 properties like Squidoo, Blogger, and WordPress.com
- Social bookmarking / networking sites like digg, twitter, Mr Wong
- PPC – technically, they are links back to your website that you pay for.
- Forum signatures
- Forum comments
- Press releases
- Answer sites like Yahoo Answers
- One-way link services
- Hiring somebody on Fiverr (or elsewhere) to link back to your website
- Write an ebook, ask people to review your work
- Guest blog
- Get a guest blogger. He will do what it takes to get his post (on your site) read by others.
- Craigslist
- ebay
- YouTube (put your link right in the description of your uploaded video)
- Publish "software" and upload to download.com
- Get or make a WordPress theme (PLR or free), put your link in the footer
That's two dozen. All are viable.

This is a great list! I love when things are made easy. And this is easy. This would be a great resource for a newbie to simply follow as a to-do list.
The best part of this is in addition to building backlinks, the work you do will drive traffic right away. If you follow this list and put thoughtful and useful content out there, people will click on your link to see what else you have to say.
@ Mike — Thanks for the comment and kind words! And I agree with you on the double-whammy of backlinks and direct traffic — why not kill 2 very important birds with one stone?
